Hovawarts are a noble and ancient German breed. Their name stems from the Middle Ages High German word Hofewart, which mean guardian of a farm or estate. The breed has been documented back as far as the 13th century with stories of Hovawarts protecting estates and going into battle alongside Medieval Knights. Throughout history these dogs have been bred for their intelligence, bravery, and devotion to their family. All traits which have proved that this breed is, in fact, worthy to carry the distinguished name of Hovawart.
